Of course, the claim is that he was really talking about people smugglers, because it’s alright for politicians to bash people smugglers. Those evil scummy people smugglers! Traffickers in human misery and despair! Exploiting refugees for their own selfish gain! Hate them! Shun them! Punish them and their suspiciously-foreign-looking ways!
But you know how it is. Because everyone get so upset about how evil and degenerate and sub-human people smugglers are, sometimes you just can’t contain yourself and in a complete slip of the tongue, you end up hurling abuse at defenceless refugees. Those damn people smugglers! How dare they embarass our politicians by making them look like heartless racists! Punish them! Send them away!
